4th Commandment – Keep Holy the Sabbath.
Pastor S. Collins www.LifePointRenton.org
Exodus 20 v 8
Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
God loves us so much that he tells us to take a day off to connect with him.
The Jews had been working 7 days a week for hundreds of years as slaves in Egypt so they could provide food and survive. Then while traveling in the desert – if they took a day off they might starve. So this commandment was a great gift and required faith in God.
Manna – translates to “what is it”. Couldn’t store it as it rots overnight. So they had to trust in God that he would provide. On the 6th day what they got lasted 2 days. So I can produce enough in 6 days that I don’t have to work on the 7th.
1. I am dependent on God – even when I am successful.
2. The pause (rest) in music is good as it gives a break from one to the next. It lets the first sink in and provides anticipation of the next to come.
Teaches that work isn’t necessary for me to be worthy. We have value if working or not. We are worth so much that God created all this for us.
3. We are human beings not human doings. We were built for working 6 and taking 1 off.
4. Allows us to reconnect to God. Sign of a covenant with God. If not careful we forget who we are.. God’s children. Sunday – church, rest of the day to rest and love God.
Burning the candle at both ends is not very bright.
Keeping a bow always stretched is not good.
Take mini sabbaths throughout the week to love God.
Its not what I do – but who I am in Christ that defines me.
Isaiah 58: 13-14 Delight in the Sabbath & keeping it holy will cause joy in the LORD and feast on the inheritance of your father Jacob.
